And the entire series falls apart with a single paragraph in DH -

[Voldemort] raised the wand. She screamed. Two young children came running into the hall. She tried to sheild them with her arms. There was a flash of green light--

Oh, look! A mother protecting her children with her love! Just like every other mother who loves her children would do, or their fathers, if they are all present together when Voldemort struck. So why isn't Voldemort down one soul and missing a body again?

Granted, Voldemort most likely left the prior killings to his minions, but it's a hard stretch of belief that he didn't go after any family during his long reign of terror. Still, I might have let it lie if this paragraph hadn't appeared. Sloppy, sloppy writing.
  • Do we know that's a mother? Perhaps it's just a nanny. And maybe Voldemort killed her first, instead of the children being protected by her.

    [edit] I haven't read the book recently, I'm just speculating. ^.^;

    • We don't know for sure it's the mother, but the way it's framed, it would be construed as mom. She doesn't say anything either or demand Voldemort leave the children alone. And Voldemort killed Lily first before going after Harry.

      It's just a bad paragraph to have in there, because it prompts those paying attention to go wtf?! and brings back the question that I had from the very first book: wouldn't every mother do that for their child?
  • I have to ask: why on earth are you re-reading these books if they irritate you so much? I don't understand!
    • Ah, but they didn't irritate me until the re-read. And then, only chunks irritate me, but overall I am a Potterhead, or else I wouldn't be doing it!
  • Could the difference be that the mother was toast as soon as Voldie saw her? Didn't he offer to leave Lily alive if he got Harry and she refused? That way Lily had a chance to live and sacrificed it for her son, while Voldemort had no intention of letting the mother go in DH...
    • That is the most likely explanation. However, if, as a reader, you have to rationalize something, it's not very good writing.
